Principal research field is microbial ecology and specialization areas are: 1) Diversity and biogeography of root nodule bacteria (rhizobia), including evaluation of rhizobial diversity by polyphasic approach; analysis of association among the rhizobial groups, genetic background of their host plants, and their geographic origins; analysis of determinants of rhizobial biogeography, such as soil conditions and molecular bases of the biogeography of rhizobia. 2) Diversity and biogeography of endophytic microorganisms, including endophytic bacteria associated with root nodules and with heavy metal resistant plants, endophytic fungi associated with medical and heavy metal resistant plants; 3) Diversity of bacteria participating biotransformation in soil, including cellulose degradation, nitrogen fixation and phosphate solubilization, and petrol biodegradation. etc.
